Canary Bird (Shrub Rose)
Canary Bird is a spectacular rose when grown in the right place. Always amongst the first roses to bloom on the nursery. Give it plenty of room to spread and you will have arching garlands of bright, canary yellow flowers from late spring. The small, dainty blooms have prominent brownish red stamens that make it very bee friendly. The mass of yellow blooms open saucer shaped and have a pleasant scent. Graceful, bright green fern-like foliage.
Whilst it is one of the earliest roses to flower (mostly spring and summer) you may get a few blooms appear later in the year.
This shrub rose can grow very large, so give it plenty of room as pruning will spoil its natural grace. It can also resent pruning, which could result in die back. The only pruning this rose needs is to remove crossing shoots and old, tired stems.
Canary Bird is a healthy rose, tolerant of all soil types and shade – avoid planting in a site exposed to cold winds as this can harm the tender buds in spring.
This shrub rose is fantastic grown as a hedge or trained along a fence.
Winner of the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit 1993.
