Journal of a rose gardener 24/11/16
Making or decorating a Christmas wreath with family is a lovely tradition, passing skills from generation to generation, providing an opportunity for quality time together and memories which will last a life time. They also make very thoughtful Christmas gifts.
At Country Garden Roses we have plain Christmas wreaths, ready for decorating. The wreath itself is made from a natural straw wreath, which will help retain moisture, and dressed with non-drop fir.
There are an enormous variety of materials which can be added to a wreath. Holly with berries, Ivy, Moss, pine cones, dehydrated oranges and cinnamon are all beautiful, traditional choices. If you fancy something a little more creative, you might like to consider Heuchera for its colour, Bay, Lavender, Rosemary or Sage leaves for their scent, dried rose hips, Birch or Hazel catkins. The only limitation is your imagination! Our resident gardener has put together a collection of fresh decorations that will be included with every wreath to get you started!
Wreaths positioned outside normally last around 4 - 5 weeks, but wreaths positioned indoors will have a shorter life of around 2 - 3 weeks, so bear this in mind before you start your wreath, to make sure it is still looking healthy and happy on Christmas Day. Spray the wreath regularly with water and replace any tired foliage if needed.
Send us photographs of your finished wreaths on Facebook, we would love to see the results!
