ROSE NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
New Pope John Paul 11 Rose It is exciting news in the gardening world. This winter marks the release of the Pope John Paul II rose, arguably the finest white rose ever, which is grown right here in Narromine.
This rose is a magnificent flowering tribute to one of the world’s most beloved leaders. The Pope John Paul II rose produces luminous, pristine and lavishly petalled blossoms with a delightful, fresh citrus fragrance. The elegant rose grows in the Vatican’s private garden and is elevated in test gardens around the world and of course in Australia.
This exceptional hybrid tea rose has consistently received top ratings for vigour, superior disease resistance and magnificent bloom form.
Anna Hitchcock from Edgerton Nursery said although some people may not be interested in the release of the rose it was a significant thing for the town of Narromine and those with a green thumb.
“It is a big deal,” Anna said.
“This is the finest white rose ever and it is grown here at Swane’s Nurseries.
“It is significant in the gardening world and it is so exciting to have in Narromine - Swane’s is the home to them - it is great country to grow roses in.”
With gardening being a passion for many Anna is looking forward to the busy season ahead despite the limited number of Pope John Paul II roses available.
“Due to the amount of rain we had last year we haven’t got the number of roses you’d normally get as it did have a devastating impact on them,” Anna said.
“Despite this the rose will be a huge seller. It is really great they have been released and it will be similar to when the Jane McGrath rose was released which was a huge year.”
Last October the performance of the single rose variety, Pope John Paul II, created a new benchmark for performance and vigour as it was awarded the rose of the year in the presence of the Lord Mayor of Adelaide and the President of the World Federation of Rose Societies with due acclaim.
Swane’s Nurseries has thus shown once again just what good breeding is all about. After two years of strenuous testing and evaluation the rose variety dedicated internationally to Pope John Paul II, was elevated to the best white hybrid tea rose available in Australia. The rose blitzed a strong field of varieties from across the nation and all over the world.
Ten per cent of the sales proceeds of this rose go to local Australian charities as directed by the Vatican and administered by the Catholic Archdiocese, Sydney.
This rose is also available in the USA but not yet in the UK.
