NEW ROSE GARDEN
Sir John Hall has recently announced his plans to create a £2m Rose Garden at his Wynyard Estate in the Tees valley.
Sir John who is the lifetime president of Newcastle United Football Club, and also master minded the building of the Metro Centre, bought the estate back in 1986 as a home for himself and his wife Mae.
The family have turned the beautiful stately home into the premier venue in the North East for weddings, events, conferences, accommodation etc and have recently been awarded a four star rating.
Sir John admits that the five acre garden has been a little neglected over recent years, but the plan is now to create one of the best and largest Rose Gardens in the country if not the world. The new garden will be located in the former walled kitchen garden and the adjacent Italian garden and will be the home for up to 100,000 roses. Garden designer Simon Dorrell has been given the task and everyone is delighted with the plans. If planning applications and English Heritage approval is uncontested, work could start next summer, with a view to be open to the public in two or three year’s time.
Plans also include landscaping a valley on the 2000 acre estate, and installing a 1000 seat marquee plus increasing the accommodation in the Hall and building a luxury spa, but the jewel in the crown will be the Rose Garden.
Sir John said “I want it to be a garden of my time – the Victorians were of their time - I am very excited about this garden. People will come from all over the country and stay in the local hotels and use local facilities. The benefit will extend well beyond Wynyard”.
